The friars of Neudeck ob der Au starting brewing beer in 1634 to get them through the difficult workday. In 1780 the monks were granted licence to sell their beer throughout Bavaria, but the monastery closed down 19 years later. In 1806 the brewery was acquired by a wealthy brewer who modernized the facilities and started selling the beer at Oktoberfest in 1815. Through the next 200 years the Paulaner brewery survives riots, fires, and wars. Today they continue to produce high quality beer and are Germany's 8th best selling brewery.
