Owning a solid copper mug is much bigger responsibility than you'd ever guess. With this privilege comes a necessity to know how to own a copper mug. How do you clean a copper mug? What makes it safe to drink out of? Why do they even exist? If you can't answer these questions, then you've embarrassed the whole copper mug community. Luckily, the Moscow Mules team is here to help you become an expert on copper mug ownership, history, and usage.

Why is a Copper Mug the Best Choice for a Moscow Mule?

As you know, using a copper mug to hold your Moscow Mule is essential like the actual ingredients for the Moscow Mule. Trying to serve a Mule in a standard cup is about as strange as serving it in a children's sippy cup: you just can't get away doing it without ridicule. But where did this weird rule come from?

First of all, let's consider the practicality of using a copper mug. Since the Moscow Mule is a cocktail, you want a container that can keep the beverage chilled for a long time. Copper handles this task beautifully, as copper metal quickly absorbs the icy temperature of the drink. Once the metal is cold, it is very effective with insulating a liquid's existing temperature. This is especially true for the summer time, as the copper not only helps the drink stay cool, but it also reflects the sun (instead of absorbing its heat). Lastly, the actual mug handlebar of the container prevents your hand's heat from affecting the drink's temperature.

Aside from heat-aversion reasons, the copper material actually enhances the taste of a Moscow Mule. When the vodka touches the mug's copper walls, it actually oxidizes and intensifies the taste of the vodka. Additionally, since there's ginger beer in a Moscow Mule, the copper also causes the beer to bubble more and taste fresher. The cold copper also keeps the lime cold, which helps the acidity stay tangy and refreshing. When all of these elements of the Moscow Mule work together so cohesively, it's no wonder why copper is the best choice for serving the drink.

The ingredients used to make a Moscow Mule cocktail:

  • 1/2 ounce of lime juice
  • 2 ounces of vodka
  • 6 ounces of ginger beer

So this totals to about 9 ounces plus 1/2 cup of ice cubes. Therefore, a copper mug shouldn't be any less than 12 ounces. Otherwise, you will be unable to concoct a proper Moscow Mule. The typical size for a copper mug is 14-16 ounces, which is the ideal size for creating this cocktail.
