Mugs
In German-speaking areas these beer mugs or tankards are also known as Bierkrug, meaning "beer mug." Maß is the German word that indicates the amount of beer in a regulation German mug. The same word is often used as an abbreviation for Maßkrug, the handled drinking vessel holding the German beer. Humpen is the German word that describes tankard-like beer mugs (usually .5 Liter or 1 Liter steins) that are typically used in German beer gardens. This is especially the case at the Munich Oktoberfest where they are preferred for their robustness and strength.
So, what is the difference between an Oktoberfest Beer Stein and a German Mug?
Although fundamentally similar, to put it simply, a German Mug is a large cup for cold or hot liquids usually having a handle and used without a saucer. Common sizes are .5 Liter Beer Steins or 1 Liter Tankards. A Stein is also a beer mug that comes in a range of sizes from .25 Liter to 2 Liters and typically has more ornate features such as engravings, metal lids, hand-painted German scenes, or metal medallions.
Both Oktoberfest Steins and German Mugs are traditionally used for drinking beer, especially at large gatherings.
Mugs are heavier and sturdier than Steins. Hence their popularity for use during Oktoberfest parties where a German polka being played could result in all spontaneously start dancing with beer stein in hand!
What makes German Beer Mugs so heavy?
The first German beer mugs were made from clay. Then, over time, mugs were made from other materials such as wood. However, wood tends to grow bacteria in the tiny cracks and crevices of the beer stein that appear after prolonged use resulting in a rancid smell and altering the taste of the German beer.
With time, metal beer steins were used as a replacement for wood, however, the metal beer stein tends to give a metallic flavor to the German beer.
Glass is also one of the primary materials used for making beer mugs. The clear material of glass beer mugs allows for the beer drinkers to enjoy the variety of colors found in the different German beers such as pilsners, ales, and lagers as well as giving a front-row seat to view the gentle bubbles making their way to the surface. Not only that, but the glass used to make the German glass steins will not alter the flavor or aroma of the German beer.
Thick ceramic German beer mugs also mean the steins can withstand periods of time in the freezer with the purpose of getting the stein crispy cold to keep your Bavarian beer chilled on the hottest of days!
